WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 18, 2004) – Lisa Jose Fales, an experienced antitrust and consumer protection attorney, joins the Advertising and Marketing Group of Venable LLP.

Ms. Fales comes from Howrey Simon Arnold & White LLP in Washington D.C., where she had been a partner in that firm’s Government Antitrust Group.

Ms. Fales’s career has focused on representing companies in connection with various consumer protection matters. She has also concentrated on antitrust work related to mergers and acquisitions – shepherding corporate clients through the rigors of the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice approval process. She has also counseled and defended clients in advertising and consumer protection suits brought by state and federal agencies, work that she expects will continue at Venable. Ms. Fales previously served as Chair of the D.C. Bar’s Consumer Affairs Committee.

“Venable’s outstanding reputation and the high caliber of its attorneys attracted me to the firm,” Ms. Fales said. Among the members of Venable’s Advertising and Marketing Group are Edward F. Glynn, Jr., a former Associate Director of the Federal Trade Commission, Gary D. Hailey, a former attorney advisor to former FTC Commissioner Mary L. Azcuenaga and program advisor in the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, and Jeffrey D. Knowles, head of the group and chair-elect of the Electronic Retailing Association. In September the firm successfully defended former baseball star Steve Garvey in a closely watched case in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding celebrity endorsements and testimonials.

“Venable is one of only two or three national firms prominent in this field, and I hope to continue to grow its presence among major advertisers and marketers,” she added.

Ms. Fales is no stranger to Venable. During the summer of 1989 she worked as a summer associate in the firm’s Baltimore office. “I regard this as less of a new start and more as a welcome return,” she commented.

Ms. Fales received her first professional exposure to the law when she worked for six years in the Consumer Protection Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office in Baltimore as a legislative liaison, drafting and analyzing legislation and testifying before the Maryland General Assembly. It was in her time at the Attorney General’s Office that Ms. Fales began law school at the University of Baltimore.

Ms. Fales’s clients range from Fortune 500 companies to entrepreneurs bringing their products to market for the first time. “Very often the innovative and emerging companies need considerable counseling to ensure a successful introduction to the marketplace,” she said.

“Lisa's strong antitrust and advertising experience, combined with her prior leadership on the Consumer Affairs Committee of the D.C. Bar Association, will add further strength to our advertising and trade regulation practice,” said Mr. Knowles. “Her experience will be especially valuable to our Fortune 500 and other clients in the highly competitive consumer products and services industries.”
