Venable partner Melissa Landau Steinman was quoted in a January 19 BNA article covering a recent speaking engagement during which she discussed the surge in social media-related lawsuits in 2010 and the need for businesses to "exercise caution as they expand their presence in new communication technologies."

With regard to the impact current litigation, legislation and regulation will have in the future, Steinman said that principles gleaned from those cases can help predict how courts will address emerging activities when they come before the bench. She added that companies would be wise to explore past years' developments to manage their future risks.

Steinman also advised that companies can minimize social media risks by setting clear website usage policies and policies explaining the host's responsibilities for screening uploads and removing objectionable content.
