On January 1, 2025, Law360 quoted Ashley Craig on potential tariff and trade policy changes expected in the new Trump administration.
According to the article, the reelection of Donald Trump has brought U.S. trade policy back into focus, as attorneys prepare for the tariff and deal-making changes reminiscent of his first term.
For example, after years of escalation and U.S. tariffs on more than $300 billion worth of trade from Beijing, the two sides struck a deal that bound China to purchase more U.S. goods and make systemic policy changes.
However, those commitments have not been met, and attorneys are wondering whether any new China tariffs will be a standing punishment against Beijing, or will be used in negotiations to improve the relationship between the two countries.
Commenting on the future of trade policy and trade changes, Craig told Law360, "I'm hopeful that we will have folks surrounding the president that see this as an opportunity to engage in substantive policy discussions and maybe secure some wins on the policy front from a U.S. perspective.”
