Anne-Thérèse Béchamps


Anne-Thérèse Béchamps has a diverse practice in the areas of real estate and commercial finance.

Anne-Thérèse negotiates and documents the acquisition, financing and disposition of all types of commercial real estate, including land for development, with a particular focus on mixed-use and hotel developments. Her extensive financing experience includes term and revolving credit facilities secured by real and personal property, construction financing, mezzanine loans and credit enhancements. She regularly advises clients on matters involving Article 9 (Secured Transactions) of the Uniform Commercial Code. She has led numerous complex syndicated and portfolio transactions, as well as many single-asset deals, through to completion.

Anne-Thérèse began her legal career practicing in the area of bankruptcy and creditors' rights and brings that experience and perspective to structuring transactions to protect her clients’ interests. When necessary, she is able to guide her clients through the foreclosure, receivership, and workout processes. Her broad experience, thoughtful problem-solving skills and collaborative negotiation style benefit clients in achieving successful outcomes.

Significant Matters

Anne-Thérèse represents real estate investors, developers and owners, as well as banks and other institutional lenders. She also advises other Venable clients in the real estate and financing aspects of their businesses.

In prior engagements, Anne-Thérèse has represented: 
  • owners of hotels and other commercial real estate in acquisition, construction and refinance loans
  • a privately owned hotel developer and owner in the $1.7 billion disposition of a 100-property hotel portfolio
  • an international public company in the acquisition and development of hotel projects
    a special servicer in multiple portfolio sales of office, retail, multifamily and hotel REO properties
  • an international family-owned food and agriculture company in over $1 billion of secured term and revolving-credit facilities
  • the lead bank in syndicated construction financings for various mixed-use projects 


Anne-Thérèse is the current Chair of the Hotels, Resorts and Tourism Committee of the American Bar Association's Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section.

She served on the subcommittee that authored the personal property, real property and recordation tax sections of the 2007 Report on Lawyers' Opinions in Business Transactions by the Special Joint Committee of the Section of Business Law and the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning of the Maryland State Bar Association and currently chairs the Business Law Section’s Opinion Committee. She is also a member of the Planning Committee for the Advanced Real Property Institute for the Maryland State Bar Association.

She is a member of Venable's Opinion Committee, Ethics Committee, and Wellness Committee. She also serves on the Mission Advisory Board for the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, and counsels the Executive Board of the Assistance Center of Towson Churches (ACTC).
