Michael Pickett counsels clients on all aspects of commercial real estate transactions. These include single-asset and portfolio sales and acquisitions, equity investments, joint ventures, financings for borrowers and lenders, and real estate debt restructurings. Among Michael's clients are real estate developers, REITs, investors and operators, banks and other financial institutions, and pension and other fund advisers.

Prior to joining Venable, Michael was a partner in the real estate practice group at an international law firm. He previously worked as an asset manager with a DC bank holding company, concentrating on real estate loan workouts, restructures, foreclosures, and bankruptcies.

Representative Matters

  • Represented the seller in connection with the 2017 sale of 900 16th St. NW in Washington, DC, a 122,362 square foot, newly constructed, trophy office building with first-floor retail, which garnered the highest price per square foot for a DC office sale. The sale and the project concluded more than seven years of work, won the Washington Business Journal's Best New Office Development Award in 2016, and was a 2017 Deal of the Year honoree
  • Represented the borrower in connection with the $80 million refinancing of a 253-unit apartment project located in Alexandria, Virginia
  • Represented the developer/sponsor in connection with a joint venture for the development of a budgeted $130 million, two-phase mixed-use development project in Reston, Virginia
  • Represented the lender in connection with a $42 million bridge loan for four retail condominium units located in SoHo, New York City
  • Represented the buyer in the acquisition of the 398-unit apartment community known as The Manor at CityPlace located in Doral, Florida
  • Represented the developer in connection with the joint venture equity funding and a $147.6 million construction loan for a 30-story unit multifamily residential tower and mixed-use project located in Rosslyn, Virginia
  • Represented the seller in connection with the sale of a NoMa area, District of Columbia mixed-use project just constructed, consisting of a 303-unit multifamily residential development, a national retailer, and ancillary retail
  • Represented a long-time client from Ireland as U.S. counsel in connection with the U.S. hotel collateral for an approximately €250 million refinance credit facility
  • Represented a local hotel sponsor in connection with a $33.9 million construction loan, and then a recapitalization of a hotel located in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood of downtown Washington, DC, directly across from the Navy Yard Metro Station, one block from Nationals Park
