First-chair trial lawyer Jeannine Yoo Sano has more than 30 years of experience handling patent and trade secret trials in tribunals across the country in technology fields such as mobile communications, video processing, graphics, operating systems, memory, power management, medical devices, and semiconductor manufacturing. She has also obtained wins at the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as prevailing on an issue of first impression before the California Courts of Appeal on the Uniform Trade Secrets Act (UTSA).

Jeannine has tried cases in the Eastern, Western, and Northern Districts of Texas, Middle District of Florida, Northern District of Illinois, and Northern District of California, in addition to the International Trade Commission (ITC) and Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). She shares her trial skills with practicing attorneys by regularly participating as faculty for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) and volunteers her time to judge the Federal Bar Association's Moot Court Competition, the American Mock Trial Competition, and the American Bar Association (ABA) National Appellate Advocacy Competition. Jeannine has also been a guest instructor for Notre Dame Law School's trial advocacy program and mock trial and patent law programs at Stanford Law School. She previously served as Chair of the Patent Litigation and ITC Practice Committees of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property.

Representative Matters

  • Obtained final determination of no violation at the ITC based on non-infringement and invalidity of all four patents involving UMTS/LTE standards asserted against mobile communication modules
  • Obtained final written decisions finding all 100+ challenged claims unpatentable in IPRs of four semiconductor manufacturing patents being asserted in 10 district court litigations
  • Obtained judgment of invalidity of all asserted patents involving video uploading/publishing in Delaware; affirmed by the Federal Circuit
  • Obtained complete defense jury verdict of non-infringement of all accused CAD software products and invalidity of all asserted claims on every ground in the Northern District of Texas; obtained cancellation of all claims in ex parte reexamination
  • Obtained final determination of no violation at the ITC as to all five asserted patents relating to LCD manufacturing; affirmed by the Federal Circuit
  • Achieved global resolution of litigations following initial determination of no violation at the ITC as to all intervened patents involving mobile device technology
  • Resolved a 337 Investigation and corresponding district court litigation involving five patents relating to CMOS image sensors
  • Obtained judgment of invalidity of digital streaming patent in the Eastern District of Texas; affirmed by the Federal Circuit
  • Obtained judgment of invalidity of computer graphics software patent and denial of Rule 59 motion by the Central District of California; affirmed by the Federal Circuit; Cert. denied
  • Obtained judgment of invalidity of all asserted patents involving social networking technology (plus award of all costs following the contested motion) in Delaware; all challenged claims cancelled by the PTAB
  • Resolved patent dispute involving RF tuners following jury verdict in the Western District of Texas pending Federal Circuit appeal
  • Prevailed in bench trial in trade secret and patent dispute involving online financing technology; appeal dismissed
  • Resolved trade secret dispute involving MPEG2 technology following bench trial in the Northern District of Illinois
  • Obtained injunction in trade secret misappropriation action involving surgical coils for minimally invasive treatment of aneurysms
  • Obtained judgment of dismissal plus award of attorneys' fees in trade secret litigation involving adhesive manufacturing technology; affirmed on appeal
